Our Domestic Gas Foundation Managed Learning Programme (MLP) training course is designed for candidates wanting to enter the gas industry.

This course has been designed to provide a route into the gas industry for individuals who do not currently hold the pre-requisite qualifications necessary to qualify to undertake assessments under the Accredited Certification Scheme for Individual Gas Fitting Operatives (ACS).

The course requires approximately 280 hours in our centre environment plus ‘on the job’ training with candidates providing work-based evidence under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered installer. Assessments normally consist of a combination of practical and theory.

On completion of the training, portfolio and successful recommendation, candidates are issued with a Gas Foundation certificate. Upon receipt of the Gas Foundation certificate candidates can then apply to undertake the relevant ACS assessments. Upon successful completion of this assessment, the candidate can join the Gas Safe Register.

The programme can be completed either one full day per week, or two evenings per week. Our next daytime course will be delivered on Saturdays commencing 23rd April 2022, hours of attendance will be 0900-1600. Our next evening course will be delivered on Tuesdays and Thursdays commencing  January 2023, hours of attendance will be 1800-2100. Please note these evenings differ from originally stated due to operational requirements.

The duration of the training programme is flexible and is dependent upon the candidate gaining sufficient on-the-job and off-the-job experience. The off-the-job (classroom-based) training programme will take 45 weeks, attending either one day per week or two evenings per week to complete.

As well as the completion of the portfolio, the candidate must provide evidence of a range of work experience representative of a minimum of 420 hours. The candidate must ensure they have access to a registered gas engineer in order to complete the on-site requirements of the course.

While it is difficult to predict what will be encountered on the job, the work experience must be suitably varied to ensure that the person did not do exactly the same thing day after day. The portfolio should provide evidence of real world work experience gained by the candidate.

We would envisage a candidate achieved a minimum of CCN1 (core gas safety) and CENWAT (central heating boilers and water heaters), other appliances, such as CKR1 (cookers) and HTR1 (space heaters – gas fires) can be achieved if appropriate experience is documented in the portfolio. The details of portfolio requirements will be covered by your tutor within the first few weeks of starting the course.
